you can get an incandescent bulb in bright white instead of yellow. Florescent light bulbs come in yellow, off white, and bright white. A 100 watt incandescent white light gives 4 X the candlepower of 2 50 watt incandescent light bulbs(same amt of electricity used).
Florescent bulbs don't last very long and are extremely dangerous, if broken, both from the sharp edges and the poisonous gas being released. Even unbroken they don't fit in recycle bins unless you break them first.

Let's see. Fluorescent light flicker and buzz. The sizes are very inconvenient. The frequency spectrum is quite limited. Compact fluorescents in my house do not last longer. I've got a bag of dead ones. Heat is not a negative since I live in the Northern USA and we need heat 9 months of the year (at least) -- not the 3 you mention. CFLs don't work well in the cold here. I call BS on the "danger" of removing a dead one. I've had to deal with broken compacts also.
Running a 100watt bulb for 4 hours a day costs me $14 per year. Not a savings of $60 no matter how you slice it. I'm all for green and do use CFLs when they make sense, but it's all a tradeoff. CFLs involve a lot more technology and bad chemicals to produce and bad chemicals to dispose of. Not really so cut 'n' dried.
